The pace of change today ushered in by use of new digital tools that enable us to access ever increasing volumes of information and knowledge has a sig-nificant effect on the way people live, work, and play. Information systems invariably involve the inter-action of people, processes and technology. In-formation use is what drives all other information behaviours – the ultimate purpose for which in-formation is needed and sought after. Under-standing information use also informs how information systems should be designed and implemented in projects of scale paticularly those which Digital Summit undertakes. 

People use information to create knowledge – the final step of an information-seeking process. But information alone is only part of a longer chain. By embracing this aspect about information as being fundamentally valid, project work we do begins by first examining and analysing information behavior in a workplace setting to better understand the full cycle – from emergence of a need to locating information to solve that need through to making it available to appropriate users. 

QUALITY OUTCOMES 

To make these connections Digital Summit employs a technique developed in business and industrial engineering – Task Analysis. It examines the many types of work processes undertaken by a client organisation and essentially studies what an operator or team of operators is required to do in terms of actions or cognitive processes to achieve a system and, therefore, an organisational goal. 

As we undertake such analyses, three approaches are employed: (a) the normative approach or how a system should behave; (b) the descriptive approach describing how a system actually works in practice; and, (c) the formative or predictive approach which specify the requirements that must be satisfied so that the system eventually behaves in a new or desired way.
