Storage Area Networks

WHEN THINGS GO WRONG

Natural disaster scenarios like fire, earthquakes, hurricanes and floods as well as those caused by humans such as intentional or unintentional accidents, walkouts, sabotage, burglary, virus, intrusion, etc., are unavoidable. These are some of the major reasons for failure.

Storage Area Networks (SANs) enable more effective disaster recovery processes. They help avoid larger losses in scenarios where business cannot continue to function due to its loss. SANs ensure business continuance in a disaster.

BENEFITS OF EMPLOYING SANs

It has been estimated that most large organisations spend between 2% and 4% of their IT budget on business continuity and disaster recovery planning. Those that don’t con-sequently experience major loss of business data – 43% never reopen, 51% close within two years, and only 6% manage to survive long-term.

The cost and complexity of SANs have dropped in recent years, resulting in much wider adoption across both enterprise and small- to medium-sized business environments.

  • SANs are primarily used in large scale, high performance enterprise storage operations – an environment most public and private-based enterprises likely find themselves operating in.
  • Employs an architecture that attaches remote computer storage devices e.g., disk arrays, tape libraries, etc. in such a way that devices appear locally attached to the operating system. It is scalable and flexible.
  • Increases storage capacity utilisation. Multiple servers consolidate their private storage space onto the disk arrays.
  • Allows servers to boot from the SAN itself for a quick and easy replacement of faulty servers.
  • Enables business continuity and more effective disaster recovery processes.

We would be happy to sit down with you and work with your IT Group to discuss, design, and implement SANs for your organisation to eventuate its business continuity and disaster recovery goals.
